Competing Standard-Setting Organizations: A Choice Experiment

Standard-setting organizations (SSOs) establish goal-directed networks for innovators to jointly shape technology and markets through standards. The degree which this can succeed depends a large extent on network characteristics, may differ substantially between SSOs. Many technological fields face intense competition Choosing the right one is thus key strategic decision innovators. Simultaneously, SSOs must reflect members’ preferences in their set-ups governance. Yet, little known about these preferences. Based extant literature, we derive hypotheses how three themes of attributes (membership base, rules, transaction costs) contextual factors drive makers’ We conduct comprehensive choice experiment with 141 standardization professionals Internet Things field. our data, provide more realistic indication what firms value than has been previously available. also discuss results’ implications studying other contexts.
